Postdoctoral Fellowships
The goal of the postdoctoral program is to train recent PhD graduates — future researchers, professors, and professionals — in the research themes of the FishCAST program in freshwater fisheries, fish culture, and fish conservation. FishCAST aims to promote the mobility, networking, and competitiveness of early-career researchers and foster the development of collaborative and applied cutting-edge interdisciplinary research.
Financial Support
Postdoctoral fellows accepted in the FishCAST program will receive a salary of up to $55,000 for one year. They will also have access to FishCAST training activities and can apply for travel reimbursement for out-of-town events, when applicable. PDFs are equally encouraged to engage in research internship offers in the FishCAST network or source their own internship, subject to approval by the FishCAST internship committee and NSERC.
By partaking in FishCAST activities, the PDF will gain opportunities in undertaking original research, publishing research findings, developing and expanding personal research networks, broadening their teaching experience, preparing for research-intensive careers within and beyond academia, and preparing to become competitive in national research grant competitions.
Program Expectations
Beyond the requirements to engage in and publish original research, postdoctoral fellows are expected to participate in, organize, and lead professional and/or technical workshops. From these workshops, the PDF will generate collaborative and publishable review articles or reports addressing pressing issues for professionals in aspects of effective freshwater fish conservation and management. PDFs will also contribute to the co-supervision of graduate students and the mentoring of undergraduate research associates. Lastly, we expect PDFs to take part in FishCAST program activities, such as annual symposia and JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigeneity) mentorship and advocacy.
Eligibility
The postdoctoral fellowship is open to candidates with a PhD, a strong research background across the natural and social sciences, and a keen interest in bridging the gap between research and policy and management on core matters of freshwater and fish- and fisheries health. The postdoctoral fellow must join the research team of one (or more) of FishCAST’s academic members at their affiliated Universities, and have already discussed and identified a supervisor to support them during their fellowship.
