REMEDIC Role

Role of FishCAST’s Recruitment, Mobility, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigeneity Committee (REMEDIC)

Graduates of FishCAST program will be leaders in their fields because of their research activities and unique training experiences that emphasize partnership building and collaboration at a range of levels including alongside Indigenous communities, industry, government and non-governmental organizations.  The scientific research pursued by each student will be complemented by enriching place-based internships or lab exchanges, workshops, and land-based learning opportunities.

The NSERC CREATE: FishCAST Training Program (FishCAST) is targeted at fisheries and aquatic science students enrolled at any one of the partner University institutions (Windsor, Western, Waterloo, Toronto, Carleton, Manitoba, and Québec à Rimouski).  Recruitment into FishCAST began in September 2020 with graduate students (Master’s and PhD) followed by undergraduate programs in May 2021 and a recruitment pathway for Indigenous students began in September 2021.

The Recruitment, Mobility, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigeneity Committee (REMEDIC) therefore plays a crucial role for students to be admitted into FishCAST.  REMEDIC takes a holistic approach to all its functions. We will work to ensure broad participation from a diverse range of peoples and perspectives in this program, and strive to make sure they are well-supported once admitted.  One recruitment priority will be to connect the program with Indigenous students across Canada; we will initiate new and strengthen existing land-based partnerships and courses, and have dedicated support for Indigenous applicants.  All students admitted into the program will be supported through the creation of professional networks across academia, government, industry and Indigenous rights-holders (i.e., Mobility). Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Indigeneity (EDII) are a continual thread in all functions of the committee and the FishCAST community.
