Importance of Inclusion at Canadian conferences highlighted in new publication

New Publication calls for greater equity and inclusivity in Canadian aquatic science conferences

FishCAST Team members have published a timely article alongside FishCAST collaborators and community members. “On Increasing Equity and Inclusion of Early-Career Professionals for Conferences and Conference Networking in Canadian Fisheries and Aquatic Science Societies” was published by Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences in July 2024; however, the work began at the final CCFFR-SCL (Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research-Society of Canadian Limnologists) in February 2022. FishCAST hosted its very first workshop at CCFFR-SCL 2022, Diversity in Networking: Creating Opportunities for All, to help facilitate networking among early-career researchers attending the conference. Due to the amount of positive feedback from participants of the workshop, the FishCAST Team committed to producing a manuscript that included both early-career and senior researchers. The article discusses the barriers early-career face to truly being included and involved in scientific conferences and suggests ways to counteract those barriers.
